Silent Ocupation

New video by Real World Radio in the International Day Against Monoculture Tree Plantations.

To mark the celebration of the International Day Against Monoculture Tree Plantations on Friday 21, Real World Radio (Friends of the Earth International) is launching a new short video called "Silent Occupation", where the advance of tree monocultures in different parts of the world is exposed. The video also makes reference to the resistance by several communities.

"September 21 is a day to celebrate the struggles against large-scale tree plantations, said the international coordinator of the Forests and Biodiversity Program of Friends of the Earth International, Isaac Rojas.

The Costa Rican activist talked about the social and environmental consequences of tree monocultures and explained its relationship with the REDD mechanism (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation in developing countries) and the push by capitalism for green economy.

Elizabeth Diaz, of the World Rainforest Movement, a strong ally of FoEI in the struggle against tree monocultures, is also featured in the video. The Uruguayan environmentalist also made reference to the impacts of large tree plantations. She talked about their growth at world level and considered them a “false solution” to climate change.

The new video also includes many images from the forestry and pulp-cellulose industry, their negative consequences and the demonstrations by social movements that reject this model of “silent occupation”.
