Before the hand over

Henry Saragih, the outgoing general coordinator of La Via Campesina, and the principal leader of Serikat Petani Indonesia, a national peasant organization that hosted the Sixth Global Conference of Via Campesina in the capital city of Jakarta, told Radio Mundo Real that the International Operative Secretariat of La Via Campesina International will move from Indonesia to Zimbabwe.

The conference was publicly initiated this Sunday, in the presence of about 1500 people. The political debates will start tomorrow.

"La Via Campesina is an international movement which brings together millions of peasants, small and medium farmers, landless people, indigenous people, migrants and agricultural workers from around the world. It defends small-scale sustainable agriculture as a way of promoting social justice and dignity," said the peasants’ network website. It brings together 150 member organizations.

About 500 delegates from more than 70 countries of all the continents have come to the Sixth Global Conference in Jakarta. In conversation with the Radio Mundo Real, Saragih also discussed the movement’s major achievements as well as its new strategies that would be defined during the conference.
